Skyrim with the Realistic Night mod is highly entertaining. Yesterday, I trudged out across the ice floes north of Winterhold to consult a batty old mage who - well, to avoid spoilers, he had significant knowledge. By the time he had imparted the same, it was dark. Lydia and I could have waited out the night, but the guy was clearly insane, and there was no bed in his ice cave, just a creepy Dwarven mechanism, which looked vaguely threatening, so we decided to plough back to Winterhold. That was a terrifying decision. I forged carefully ahead, with a torch in one hand, and casting occasional magelights with the other. For the uninitiated, magelights are glowing balls which glide over the landscape at about running pace, briefly illuminating the areas they pass over. If they hit an object, they will stick and provide steady light for a minute or so, or until the next one is cast. So I was desperately trying to find my way across the floating ice sheets, avoiding the patches of freezing water, in pitch darkness, with these two inadequate sources providing the only light. Lydia quickly disappeared, as she often does, preferring to find her own route. I finally made land, and breathed a sigh of relief. I cast another magelight to try to locate a path up the cliff. It floated away merrily, the pool of light receding over frozen ground and stubbly vegetation. Then, in the middle distance, it revealed the fearsome shape of a snowy sabre cat, glaring menacingly and proceeding quckly towards the source of the light. I realised that Lydia hadnt caught up, and I was holding a torch and the means to conjure up - another magelight. Panic. It took me only a couple of seconds to grab my Staff of Paralysis and prepare to conjure up a Dremora Lord. Two seconds was too long. I am a mage. I wear very little armour. I was killed by the first blow of the cats claws.
