Small farmers train on organic agri technologies By DA 6 Information and Public Affairs Section Aiming to hit the National Organic Agriculture Program target of 50,000 practitioners by 2016, the Department of Agriculture (DA) Regional Field Office 6 conducted two batches of Basic Organic Agriculture Technologies Training for small farmers at Epethah Paradise Camp Sariri, Badiangan, Iloilo, last January 15 to 17 and January 22 to 24, respectively. The training enabled small farmer groups to create a multiplier force that will promote organic farming system and to ensure increased production pursuant to the Republic Act 10068 or the Organic Agriculture Act of 2010 and Philippine National Standards. Sixty farmers, farmer leaders and members of Municipal Local technical committees on Organic Agriculture participated in training on identifying the necessary support systems that will strengthen organic farming acceptance among the rural communities. Rey R. Pedroso of the National Organic Agriculture Board, Omega B. Pedroso of ACES-AMI Farm and Elias V. Sandig, Organic Agriculture Focal Person in the Province of Iloilo had discussed the Philippine National Standards for Organic Agriculture and the different organic technologies, protocols and standards for vermi composting, vegetable and chicken production, hog raising, forage production, management of pest and disease, and organic concoctions and feeds. Participants had also visited the AMI Farms at Badiangan, Iloilo and Tagbak Elementary School at Oton, Iloilo. Both are identified as learning sites in Iloilo by the Agricultural Training Institute.
