Smart Meters Letter & Videos - November 30 & December 02, 2014 Letter: [Health - Safety - Okanagan Falls, BC] Responds to Fortis letter by Doug Lychak - Penticton Herald - November 30, 2014: - pentictonherald.ca/opinion/article_10cc7ae0-78ff-11e4-aef0-ab6bdfa517a5.html Dear Editor: Re: Response to FortisBC – “Safety pivotal? (Herald, Nov. 20).FortisBC wrote regarding a presentation to the RDOS board by a “resident” raising concerns about smart meters. [- pentictonherald.ca/opinion/letters_to_editor/article_cc52411e-7049-11e4-ba26-8755c43721a6.html] For clarification, the “resident” is Dr. Malcolm Paterson Ph.D., a world-renowned molecular oncologist who has headed cancer research programs both in Canada and abroad. Dr. Paterson has received numerous honours and awards for his research into environmental-hereditary interactions in cancer causation authoring 180 scientific articles. He has reviewed the burgeoning literature on potential harmful effects of electro-magnetic fields (EMF’s) from smart meters and other radiofrequency-emitting devices and his RDOS presentation clearly showed that more study must be done to prove that these devices are not harmful. Recently, numerous renowned international health and scientific organizations have stated that the existing World Health Organization recommended safety limits for EMF exposures are grossly inadequate, prompting 47 countries to recognize the potential adverse biological effects of EMF’s. Moreover, WHO’s International Agency for Research on cancer has designated smart meters, cell phones and other radiofrequency-emitting devices as “possible cancer-causing agents” along with DDT, engine exhaust and lead. I am unaware of any in-house research which Health Canada has conducted regarding smart meter safety, relying instead on recommendations from several WHO groups of questionable credibility. Health Canada for decades made no connection between smoking and lung cancer or between asbestos and mesothelioma. I, for one, refuse to accept that smart meters are “safe” and will not harm the health of the public, especially children until compelling, high-quality studies have been conducted proving their safety. It is interesting that FortisBC is trumpeting their “safety-first position”. Is this the same FortisBC which built new and substantially more powerful high-tension EMF emitting transmission lines through the middle of residential neighbourhoods? An increasing number of B.C. municipal, city and band councils have passed motions for a moratorium on the mandatory installation of wireless “Smart” Meters. Over 60 councils to date have passed said motions. Bill 23-2008 of the BC Public Health Act, section 83 states: “(1) a municipality must take action when it learns of something that could be harmful to its residents. It must notify the Minister of Health or take immediate action”. It would be beneficial to residents of the Regional District to invite Dr. Paterson and FortisBC’s AMI Project Director, Ian Dyck to a public debate regarding the scientific basis for FortisBC’s repeated assertion that smart meters are safe.
