Smithfield, VA- Pupdate on Bernard! This is from Bernards mom Janet: Well, I finally have a few minutes to give an update on Bernard. He has been with us for maybe 7 weeks or so now. He has made much progress, loves his big yard, can be easily persuaded to come in to the house and is calm and happy. He starts his heart worm procedure in a week or so and perhaps after that is over we can start training him to be less feral. He allows me to rub and pet him in the caves as we call his crates but will not come or be near us elsewhere. We do see him follow at close range now and soon his trust will grow and fear will no longer be a motive, but love will evolve and envelope us all. At times, we close off his crate and make him be in the house and now he can rest and even lay down for a bit. Slowly we progress. He has quite good house manners and is one of the kindest and gentlest of creatures I have known. The leash is still relatively unknown to him. Our old dog Limey watches over him when we put it on and calms him with this deep throat noise and settles him down, but with the heart worms we do not wish to over stress him so he just wear his collar. We fear that perhaps he does not see well, but we will continue with that after the procedure. As you can see he loves his mound. He sits there, lays there and even sleeps on this mound.- Actually it is the septic, but who cares. I have often times found myself speaking from the movie Out of Africa as if he were the lion that was spoken of on that mound. MY imitation of Meryl Strep leaves much to be desired, but we laugh and enjoy this. He is our little lion boy. We have seen him run and play, quickly with tail up and ears flipped and flying about. He is happy. We have come to love and treasure the affection that Bernard is able to give and so look forward to the development of trust over the next months or even years. I am patient and pretend to be satisfied with the small kisses on his head he allows me to bestow on him and the massages he receives. Since his freedom to the big yard he is less acceptable of these so I just sit and sing to him. He will now tolerate my affection and at times does a tongue thing that I take as the beginning of a dog kiss. He likes his food and eats from my hands before he moves to his bowl. I know that he is happy here and is at peace with himself and us. LIfe is good. We are so glad to hear that Bernard is thriving! If you have questions about any of our other dogs available for adoption, please call Tim or Julie at 757-357-9292. Happy New Year!
