Snow index moves up to a 7 for Hampton Roads! That means there is a 70% chance of an inch or more of snow in the metro region. Snow index a 10 for NE Carolina and the Outer Banks. Do you remember last week? It warmed into the 50s before the snow came? Same thing this time except the storm will come later the next day. So it will warm up nicely today with colder weather arriving late in the day. Tomorrow temps will only make it into the low to mid 20s for a high as moisture gathers to the south of the region. There will be a very sharp cut off between no snow, some snow, and tons of snow with this system. The main key to the forecast, the main driving force that determines where the coastal low forms and the exact direction the upper winds blow is the vorticity max (which is also called upper level energy by television meteorologists) that will be moving from Canada to the Atlantic Coast. Since it is still far away, any deviation in that energy can have HUGE impacts on your snowfall or lack thereof. Right now, the energy appears to want to go from Kentucky Tuesday evening and across Northern Virginia Wednesday afternoon. In this case, all of the snow will be well south of this energy. If it goes just a bit further south than current models suggest, the low forms closer to the coast and the moisture will get further inland and snow totals will shoot through the roof. A bit further north would mean the exact opposite and snow lovers very sad. I will take a general stab at snowfall totals but please understand I will be changing these numbers quite possibly by a lot either up or down on this one. My next update will be late this afternoon.
