So, I got added to this group without having any prior knowledge of it! By way of introduction, John and I have 5 acres in NE IL, where we grew our children and most of our own meat. Now we grow meat for ourselves, and others. This weekend, we loaded up our pigs and took them to our butcher. This is usually a tense day, and it takes about 3 1/2 hours to load, drive, and drop them off. This week it was 6 1/2 hours. These (2 crossbred) piggies REFUSED to get on the trailer. My husband sprained his wrist trying to accomplish this. Finally, we called a local family of REAL farmers, who know of our insanity, and are willing to help. Their son, Grant, lifted our HUGE barrow by his tail and armpits, and PUT him on the trailer. Today I called the butcher for their weights. That barrow? Approx 350 pounds, live weight. Thats one STRONG farm boy! The upshot? Once we got them ON the trailer, they wouldnt get OFF. it took almost 2 hours to accomplish that! (Grant was not with us, then!)
