So I had a conversation that I have been thinking about a lot, and to not throw anyone directly under the bus the names will be excluded. Recently I stated I was going though the OP to look for people I think are deserving of awards they do not have in an effort to get others to do the same. I was privately contacted by someone asking to send a recommendation. I have no problem with that, and I am all for boosting a signal, especially when I think someone is missing a deserved award. I asked if they had sent in a recommendation, and they said they had not. When I inquired why the answer is what has been weighing on me. They said they did not because they feel they are a nobody in the SCA. I was a bit disturbed by that remark. I think all who participate is someone in the SCA. I wondered if others feel the same. I hope not, but I guess it would not surprise me. This is coming from my experience. I have been serving with/for the Crown of Atenveldt for a little while now. In my experience (and this is my experience. If yours is different I am sorry to hear.) I have not seen the Crown intentionally treat people in the SCA as a nobody. Most are pretty conscience to include everyone they can. Of course I also know their schedules and responsibilities, and it is impossible to recognize and respond to everyone. If you are a person who feels slighted or ignored there is a good chance it was not intentional. I cant speak for others, but this has been my experience. I think one way to combat this is through recommendations. While I dont see awards as a merit badge system, I still see them as valuable recognitions for peoples accomplishments. If you have a friend that you feel is missing an award put in a recommendation weather or not you have been recognized yourself. Chances are there is someone who has noticed you, and may feel the same way. If you have a chance talk to royalty and peers. They are people too, and most pretty good ones. Communication is a two way street. Dont let perceived notions hold you or your friends back.
