So.... I have always thought the zen koan If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound as more of a philosophical question on the nature of sound- like the nature of light reflections which our eyes interpret as color. My thoughts were that a wave would be created but without the sensory perception, a human ear in this case, it wouldnt technically be a sound. But as I learn more about quantum physics and how the act of observation effects how matter reacts on a molecular level, I feel the ancient Zen masters were in tune with the psychics of reality and we are just finally beginning to realize these subtleties existed. And yes I realize Koans arent meant to be philosophical debate but a device to test a students progress in Zen practice and to see the non-duality of subject and object which in itself shows a western analytic approach to eastern philosophy.so I guess thats moot..derp
