So I just realized something. Between DC and Marvel, while both seems to retcon aspects of their superheros/villains regularly, DC is the one who seems obsessed about constructing elaborate stories to justify why they are doing it. Take the Crisis stories, Zero Hour, Flashpoint, etc. All of them are companywide crossovers which have far reaching consequences for our heroes/villains, reshaping and changing significant parts of them. Marvel, on the other hand, just retcon stuff as they see fit without feeling the need to go through retconning through deux ex machina like Flash restoring the world as much as he can remember from memory as in New 52, or Mister Mind eating parts of reality resulting in a new multiverse during 52 or Anti-Monitor destroying all the alternate universes except one in Crisis on Infinite Earths. The only one time Marvel really tried a storyline based retcon/reboot was after Onslaught Saga, with the Heroes Reborn storyline. But that got such poor reception, they immediately brought the status quo back with Heroes Return. Mavel crossovers hence, are just companywide events, but not normally events that are geared towards retconning their universe via reality altering deux ex machina (although they have their own alternate universes and such). They never bother explaining clearly how their superheros are still of similar age since the 60s, just asking us to suspend our disbelief that Spiderman has been in his late 20s/early 30s throoughout this time, on the other hand Mr and Mrs Fantastic have grown some because they went from being in a relationship to getting married and then having two kids, etc. Only the original Nick Fury and Steve Rogers young appearances were ever explained via storyline devices (serums and what not). When Marvel does retcon some stuff, they just do it more bluntly, like in the Marvel Now Iron Man, they just retconned or retold a lot of stuff from Tony Starks past by oh this is something untold from Starks past. Interesting contrast in retconning approach. One feels the need to construct complicated stories to justify the retconning, the other doesnt bother with it, just makes the changes and says well yeah, that happened. Im not saying one is right or the other is wrong, but just an observation.
