So I just took one of those Which Hogwarts house are you in quizzes? -- and it was a lot like doing that ridiculous (and debunked) Meyers-Briggs personality quiz. About half the questions I wanted to answer, Depends on what mood Im in, or, Both A and D, or, How serious and widespread is dragon pox? And it made me realize once again: The whole sorting hat thing is one of the things that bugs me most about the Potterverse. People are blends of intellect, courage, kindness, and ambition (and many other qualities. These arent opposites of each other (I hate the idea that being brainy means not being kind-hearted, or that being brave means not being ambitious), and which one predominates depends on where we are in our lives, whats happening right at that moment, what mood were in. Also, it does us good to be around people with different qualities, instead of just spending all our time around people who are like us, and youd think school administrators would realize that. And Dumbledore was right when he said he thinks they Sort too soon -- people change, and being sorted at age 11 makes that change and growth more difficult. Its not as nonsensical as the rules of Quidditch -- but I dont like it. (For the record: I got Ravenclaw.
