So I might be a bit ahead of myself and under-schooled with this - TopicsExpress

So I might be a bit ahead of myself and under-schooled with this but I found this to be a peculiar observation. Today I went to pick up the medication that I will be taking in Thailand as a preventative measure against Malaria. AFTER insurance the personal cost to me was about $85. This is enough medication to cover six weeks (the prescribed duration). However in my chemistry class we recently learned about a molecule called Quinine. Quinine is the ingredient in tonic water that you would order at a bar that gives it a bitter taste. Now this being just a common ingredient in a common solution that can be ordered at a bar the entrepreneurial side of me tells me that it is not the most expensive part of the drink. Being that this molecule is the treatment in 3rd world countries as a medication to eradicate Malaria from ones system, how the hell did my medication, (which is used as a substitute and from any findings I could come across has no more severe side effects when administered properly than quinine), cost what I estimate to be probably $70 more AFTER insurance that a drug that has been used since the 1700s to CURE Malaria?!? I understand that it may be more broad spectrum and less harsh on the bodily system but I believe I am starting to get a glimpse of what is wrong with the healthcare system.
