So I recently had a paper rejected, not because of my paleontological conclusions, but because I should show on extant animals that my method works. Doable, but I need funding, and for the grant application I need to show that my method works, so I need the paper accepted. DOH! The reviews (one by Matthew Bonnan) were very fair and helpful (thanks, Matt and Anonymous!), so I can just go and do the test on extant animals in my spare time and funded by my own money, and all is well, right? Wrong! I just received a paper for review that uses slightly different methods to come to the exact same conclusions. Essentially, it makes my work mostly unpublishable as it is no longer "novel". Half a year of work down the drain! AAARGHHHH!!!!!!!!
