So I thought Id take a few minutes away from talking about myself to post this… Of course everyone remembers his stupendous version of The Beatles With a Little Help From My Friends. A master class in how to cover a song properly, it was produced by Denny Cordell and Tony Visconti, with the cream of London session players including Jimmy Page and BJ Wilson as his backing band. I mean really, how could it miss? But its not my favourite of his. That distinction belongs to an earlier Beatles cover, Ill Cry Instead. I used to think it was Big Jim Sullivan that played guitar on it, and he does, but apparently Jimmy Page is on it as well! Needless to say it wipes the floor with The Fabs version, but despite this, as far as I now, the original 45 sank without a trace. I first discovered it on a compilation album called Hard Up Heroes which was a collection of early singles by artists that went on to bigger and better things such as Steve Marriott, David Bowie, Van Morrison…..and Joe Cocker. Ive had it on my iPod for years, and Ive lost count of the number of times people have asked me Whos that? when they hear it. Well done Joe. Well done… R.I.P.
