So I went into it with my eyes closed - still had a bit of sense.......................I still knew very little about Firat’s past, but it was the future I was more interested in. We’ve all made mistakes in the past, but we learn from these and become better people. Had I dug a little deeper at the time, I might have started to question his credibility. Had I known more about the Turkish culture, I would have seriously doubted several things at this stage. The one thing that did stand out more than anything else was his motto in life, ‘I do what I want!’ At least my man had a mind of his own and would not be ruled by his parents. That had to be a good thing if this relationship was going to progress into something more. Wanting to be sure this wasn’t just an online fantasy of Firat’s; I even asked him if he thought I would be accepted by his family and friends. Not only was there the issue here that I was European and non-Muslim, there was also the age issue and the fact I was past the breeding stage. I wasn’t so naïve to think a family of our own wouldn’t matter, and decided the subject should be brought into the open before we went any further. He convinced me there wouldn’t be a problem and was sure his mother would love me. As in all Turkish homes, the father is head the household, and he admitted he wasn’t sure how well it would go down with him. Again it came back to Firat doing what he wanted. He was obviously quite strong-minded and I felt sure we would overcome this hurdle should we need to.
