So If You Still Don’t Think That Sometimes We Are Brought Together For Bigger Reasons Listen To This Short Story from My Judging Experience at The Big E The other judge and I were getting ready to judge some of the Driving competition. A question was brought up among the officials as to why our three driving exhibitors could not all show together in the same ring. The rule was that a “small equine” could not be in the ring at the same time as a draft horse for safety reasons. As the other judge and I met in center ring we both were talking about how we agreed that driving could be dangerous under the wrong conditions. I mentioned that I had seen some scary events take place at a CDE (Combined Driving Event). He then said “well in my home town In West Virginia there is a woman who sadly lost her young daughter in a driving accident.” I said “That’s weird I had a close friend who lost her eight year old daughter while driving her pony and sadly her daughter was not wearing a helmet and got caught up in the reins when her pony spooked.” He asked what the girls name was and I told him. He said “That’s funny that’s the same name as the young girl I am talking about. What was her Mom’s name?” I told him and his face dropped. He revealed that she was originally from this area. I had been looking to get in touch with her. She was my first girlfriend throughout all of high school, we went to the prom together and she put me in my first horse show on her red roan mare, with my long hair sticking out from my hard hat. Yes – this was in the seventies. Before I knew it, they had her on the phone. When I told her who it was there was a short pause. “Wait, is this really you? What are you doing in Springfield?” I filled her in and we chatted for a few minutes. She just happens to work at a restaurant they frequent and while we were judging, his wife contacted her and told her there was someone with them that wanted to say hello. She promised to call back to catch up after so many years and I returned to the ring with the same size goose bumps you probably have now.
