So, Im getting out of work this morning and I was wearing my EMS jacket today because it was cold. I went in the gas station to pick up a scratch off and a coffee and From the corner of my eye, one of my EMS patches caught the eye of a very familiar elderly gentleman and his wife. The man started conversation with me and asked if I was in EMS, of course I said yes and all three of us carried on a conversation about life. The whole time I was talking to him, I tried my best to remember who they were until it hit me. This man was a full arrest patient I had responded to when working my Internship on an Ambulance. Working in EMS, we rarely RARELY know the outcome to all the patients we encounter on a daily basis. His wife started to cry a little and gave me a big hug and said these words.... Thank you for saving my husband. She said I was the man holding her hand in the lobby of the hospital trying to comfort her after we passed on care to the medical staff. At this point, Im almost in tears to know that the treatments my crew gave this man ultimately saved his life. EMS is a very thankless job, but on the extremely rare occasions, we will get the opportunity to meet our former patients again. This little event made me realize where my passion is...this made my day!
