So Ive basically been amusing myself with the Bitstrips App all - TopicsExpress

So Ive basically been amusing myself with the Bitstrips App all day..it reminds me of Second Life but even quirkier. More than 50% of my friends are using this so my Newsfeeds been pretty much taken over by comics and somewhat cringe-worthy puns. I did observe something very interesting though. Many of my female friends who are of dark complexion have selected light-skinned avatars (ranging from full white to light brown/beige tints) to represent themselves on the app. I only counted 5 ladies who chose to portray their skin color as it is- and half of these women are in the public service sector so perhaps their realistic portrayal is somewhat expected of them. While I do understand that you have the prerogative to build your avatar as you wish, your false portrayal of your looks leads me to believe that deep down, you are buying into this Fair is Good/White is Beautiful bullshit that has been forced down the throat of all dark-skinned Indian women since the Aryan/British invasion into the Indian sub-continent. But why? We dark-complexioned ladies are still being subjected to this nonsense in retail outlets (use Fair and Lovely Whitening Cream and youll land a hunky tall and fair-skinned husband!) or in the media (when was the last time youve seen a dark Tamil Kollywood heroine? Or any dark Tamil actress for that matter?). Women who give birth to fair babies always get heaps of praises. We still read about horror cases where women bleach their dark skin to disfigurement. And dont get me started on the wedding makeup some women subject themselves to to look WHITE on their big day. Nope, not radiant. Just plain, old White. Am I the only one who cant help but to grimace at the horrible contrast with their dark limbs? I can go on with examples but Indian ladies who are reading this- Im sure you have had some real-life scenarios come to mind already. Once again, it is your choice to do portray yourself as you like. Just remember that your choice reflects on every other dark-skinned women out there, and that your harbored resentment against your natural skin color can rub off to impressionable people and hurt them in the long run. Come on fellow dark-complexioned karuppu women- own your gorgeous color and flaunt it for the world to see!
