So Paste Magazine did an online story titled The 20 Best Television Characters of 2013. While I agree with some (Frank Underwood from House of Cards, Lucille Bluth from Arrested Development, and others), I disagree with several, and was shocked at who was left OFF the list to make room for people like The Governor from The Walking Dead. I was also shocked that their list, which was in order, listed the BEST character as Boyd Crowder from Justified. So I made my own list, because one of my fetishes or compulsions, is list making. So my top 25 TV Characters (I get that they did 20), in no particular order, limited to the last 2 years (2013-2014). And I Just have to say it; if you havent watched True Detective yet, youve been missing out on THE best single season of television at least SINCE The Wire, if not in the last 25 years. Yes, its THAT good. 1. Rustin Chole (Matthew McConaughey) - True Detective 2. Tyrion The Imp Lannister (Peter Dinklage) - Game of Thrones 3. Daniel Holden (Aden Young) - Rectify 4. Nicky Nichols (Natasha Lyonne) - Orange Is the New Black 5. Francis (Frank) Underwood (Kevin Spacey) - House of Cards 6. Sterling Archer (H. Jon Benjamin) - Archer 7. Charlie Kelly (Charlie Day) - Its Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia 8. Troy Barnes (Donlad Glover) - Community 9. Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) - Game of Thrones 10. Rudy Wade (Joseph Gilgun) - Misfits 11. Walter White (Bryan Cranston) - Breaking Bad 12. James Van Der Beek Him_self_Her) - Dont Trust the B in Apt. 23 13. Jeff Winger (Joel McHale) - Community 14. John Luther (Idris Elba) - Luther 15. Ron Swanson (Nick Offerman) - Parks and Recreation 16. Adam Sackler (Adam Driver) - Girls 17. Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) - Hannibal 18. Elizabeth Jennings (Keri Russell) - The Americans 19. Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels) - The Newsroom 20. Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) - Justified 21. Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) - Hannibal 22. Adam DeMamp (Adam DeVine) - Workaholics 23. Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) - Game of Thrones 24. Marty Hart (Woody Harrelson) - True Detectve 25. Jamie Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) - Game of Thrones Just off the list, Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlcok Holmes and Martin Freeman as Dr. John Watson in Sherlock. Danny Pudi as Abed Nadir in Community. Taylor Schilling as Piper Chapman and Laura Prepon as Alex Vause in Orange Is the New Black. Robin Wright as Claire Underwood, Michael Kelly as Doug Stamper, and Kate Mara as Zoe Barnes in House of Cards. Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen, Jerome Flynn as Bronn, Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister, Iain Glen as Jorah Mormont, and Rory McCann as Sandor The Hound Clegane in Game of Thrones. Ruth Wilson as Alice Morgan in Luther. Emily Mortimer as MacKenzie McHale in The Newsroom, Zooey Deschanel as Jess, Max Greenfield as Schmidt, and Jake Johnson as Nick Miller in New Girl. Blake Anderson as Blake Henderson, Anders Holm as Anders Holmvik, Jillian Bell as Jillian Belk, and Kyle Newacheck as Karl Hevacheck in Workaholics, Jonathan Lajoie as Taco, Stephen Rannazzisi as Kevin, Jason Mantzoukas as Rafi, and Paul Scheer as Andre in The League. Glenn Howerton as Dennis Reynolds, Kaitlin Olson as Dee Reynolds, Rob McElhenney as Mac, and Danny DeVito as Frank Reynolds in Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Claire Danes as Carrie Mathison, Damian Lewis as Nicholas Brody, Mandy Patinkin as Saul Berenson and surprisingly Morgan Saylor as Dana Brody in Homeland Aubrey Plaza as April Ludgate, Chris Pratt as Andy Dwyer, and Rob Lowe as Chris Traeger in Parks and Recreation Andrew Lincoln As Rick Grimes, Norman Reedus as Daryl Dixon, Lauren Cohan as Maggie Greene, Danai Gurira as Michonne, Scott Wilson as Hershel Greene, Chandler Riggs as Carl Grimes, Steven Yeun as Glenn Rhee, and YES I ALMOST put David Morrissey as The Governor on there, but not above Rick, in The Walking Dead. Fred Armisen as Various Characters, and Carrie Brownstein as Various Characters in Portlandia. Chris ODowd as Tom Chadwick, Michael McKean as Keith Chadwick, Ed Begley Jr. as Al Chadwick, Fred Willard as Mike Morton, and Christopher Guest as Dave Chadwick in Family Tree. Now admittedly, I dont watch Mad Men, Veep (Ive seen it, but dont watch it regularly), Downton Abbey, or Eastbound and Down (again, see, but dont watch). Paste Magazines list included, from those shows, Don Draper (Jon Hamm) from Mad Men at #3, Selena Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) from Veep at #6, The Dowager Countess of Grantham (Maggie Smith) from Downton Abbey at #11, Kenny Powers (Danny McBride) at #12, and Ted Chaough and Bob Benson (Kevin Rahm and James Wolk) from Mad Men at #15. So I cant really judge those actor/character combos very well. Whats your top 20/25?
