So, Peter Pan Live happened! I continue to be unabashedly thrilled that three hours of live theatre was on television last night. My overall thought is that the technical and visual accomplishments show the kind of impressive gains over last year that inspire confidence that this is a format that can continue to grow with each attempt to create an innovative and unique experience of theatre and television each year. I love everything about that. As a musical, Peter Pan isnt the greatest of shows, but where it is fun, it is - and was - a lot of fun for me. Allison did a credible job that wasnt explosively entertaining in the way the show needs to fly, but she was more than fine, if a bit of a reminder that the great stars of musical theatre have something more than simply the combination of voice and acting ability that make them leave indelible marks in our memories. Walken was amusingly Walken, at his best in the soft shoe pirate number. The understated approach may have contributed to the feeling the show lagged at times. (But hey, the show opens with a lullaby, not the most explosive launch!) The choreography was excellent, the ensemble were supremely talented, Kelli OHara and Wendy were both vocally exceptional and I absolutely loved the shroom-trip psychedelic Neverland sets. All in all, Im permanently on the side of grateful for the attempt, appreciative of the improvements and forgiving of flaws for the unique contribution to the modern artistic landscape! That said, here were my random thoughts through the course of watching the show for your mild amusement. 1) Nana is absolutely going to stomp Sandy from the new Annie for Best Performance by a Live Action Animal in awards season this year. 2) Law & Order: SVU and all of Kevin Williamsons shows have totally taken all the fun out of waking up to find a strange man in your bedroom. 3) Thimbles are just olden-timey thumb condoms. 4) I relate to Peter. Im pretty sure my shadow would be shady too. 5) As one, I obviously speak fairy, and Tink was draggggging Wendy. Love her. 6) Smees cap-sleeve T-shirt is a brave fashion choice. Also, can I get the name of Christian Borles arm designer? Id happily trade the cost of my gym membership for my own set. 7) A Christopher Walken soft shoe needs to be performed at every holiday party this season. 8) Some of the Lost Boys are more like Lost Definitely-Grown-Men. 9) I think I need a Lost Boy mini-hat in my life. Also, Im having a hard time deciding if Pirate Spandex or Lost Boy manpris are going to be my new Spring look. 10) The Pirate Tango was the best tango since the Tango Maureen. 11) Im just about as confused about girls as the Lost Boys are. Its also not difficult to imagine why all of the thought mother rather than girlfriend. 12) Allison Williams should also star in the Lifetime Movie The Justin Bieber Story. 13) Wendys Cliffs Notes are intents. Imagine her recapping the Bible. Mary got preggers. Jesus died. Then came back to life probably. Maybe? 14) Harry Potter Darling is my favorite one to watch in the group numbers. 15) I bet the Lost Boys twins hate the Desperate Housewives twins soooooooo much. 16) Wendy and Kelli OHara gave me Somewhere Out There split screen American Tail realness in their duet. 17) Wendy volunteered the Darlings to be the new Jolie-Pitts. Adopting errrrrrbody! 18) Tink is absolutely the Eponine of Peter Pan. 19) I DO BELIEVE IN FAIRIES! (is something I say in the mirror every morning to build my self-confidence.) 20) I dont think fairies are as in danger as Peter claimed because there were an awful lot of them waltzing on a pirate ship. 21) He did not ever say Walken the plank and someone should be fired for that. 22) If I had shown up on the window sill after being gone for who-knows-how-long, my parents reaction would not be a musical number. ANNNNNND, the End. And I clapped. Loudly. For Tink, for theatre, for the artists and their effort. Sooooooooo, what did you all think?? Did you watch??
