So VERY excited and honored, as in a couple hours I am to be a guest speaker on the Oberhasli Dairy Goat, with the ALBC. The Obers, as well as the Shire are on the ALBCs lists of endangered species of livestock. And in doing my brush-up research on the breed that I have raised for over 25 years, I have found that on the contrary, that they are recovering, actually the registry numbers show that we are actually losing ground... In 2012, a total, Americans, Grades, and Purebreds, there were 1774 registered, with the Pures registered at 74 total, then in 2013, a total of 1630 Oberhasli were registered, again the Purebreds losing ground @ 60 being registered, and according to the latest ADGA figures, only 1570 were registered last year... With a GRIM # of only 58 Purebreds being registered.... The Toggenburgs are also losing ground at an alarming rate, which is VERY sad, as they are another wonderful dairy breed... The Oberhasli has a super-sweet, laid back temperament. They produce a very good quality milk, that is sweet and great to make cheeses with as well as drink au naturele. It has a roughly 3.5 % butterfat content, and the does themselves are very good milkers. With an average of 6 to 8 lbs of milk, each daily. They are a quiet goat, also, not high maintenance and have a striking appearance. They have a deer-like, alert way about them.... Just hope to do them justice, and maybe convince others to, maybe try a couple in their herd... You may just fall in LOVE, with a goat!!! The UNIQUE ONE, the OBERHASLI!!!
