So a few days ago, I had a homophobic incident in class. It involved someone whom I think might be coming out, and some immature comments made by other classmates whom I presume to be clueless. Ive had only a few incidents like this in class before (Athos Cakiades so I felt like a ham-handed amateur-- I momentarily posted a query for advice on how to handle this, but pulled it down almost immediately because I worried about the privacy issues even in the most vague vague post. But I think that its come to a resolution. The first class period, there was no good moment to bring it up. so I left it alone. The second class, after class, a woman came up after class to show me this great video that was really an example of the Kantian Sublime. Well, Im not sure, but it could play one on tv. I showed the video, and started a class discussion, moving from Kant to the effectiveness of the video to help bullies see the damage they do, to help people who were lbgtq to feel better. They were not sure that a video could do much, but the 20 minute conversation created a tidal wave of support for gender diversity, including the occasional fist pump. I ended up making a very strong statement about homophobia not being allowed in the classroom. Its not a legitimate position, like Holocaust denial or believing the world is flat. Fingers crossed, it helped some. Here is the video: youtu.be/XP4clbHc4Xg
