So, as promised here is the review for Red States latest release, High Bison. Red States is a four piece band from Richmond, VA and it is not an accident that an adjective did not proceed the word band. If you try to stamp a label on these guys they will release a new set of songs that defies everything they have come up with previously all while keeping their unique sound close enough to keep their entire catalog coherent and cohesive. Their latest effort, the five* song EP High Bison, is a whirlwind of power and raw emotion that is beautifully wrapped up in poppy riffs and wicked distortions. A more cleaned up sound that is still rough around the edges allows Red States to power themselves out of the speakers and into the listeners soul. The album begins with the track And Thats Why You Always Leave a Note which sets the scene for the rest of the record. Dripping with power pop and catchy riffs, Leave a Note is a perfect introduction to the newest version of Red States. Ohs and Ahs backing vocals add to the bouncy rhythm and captures the listener from the first seconds which leads into a hard breakdown that morphs into an almost jam band-ish bridge which leads right back to the power pop. All in just the first song! The second track, Last Rites, is a darker and harder song that features intense drumming and palm muted guitars. The listener is treated to a more angry sound that captures the raw emotion of the lyrics that describe bad decisions and untimely endings. The second half of the song slows down into a haunting plea to wake up which leads oh-so-well into the third track. What to Expect When Expecting Nothing starts with a haunting drum march and slowly evolves into a hard hitting riff of heartache and sorrow. This track is a highlight of an already bright set of songs. The EP is concluded with another deceptively happy sounding song, Resignation Letter, that features darker lyrics about all the negative aspects of relationships and a re-recording of their previously released Vida Blues from their first full length album, A Gentlemans Shiv. --*there is also an edited version of Vida Blues bringing the track total to 6-- Hands down, the most appealing aspect of Red States is their ability to reinvent themselves with each release all while sounding consistently like the same band. High Bison is their best effort yet and we have a feeling that statement will be true each time Red States offers us up more music. Do yourself a favor and listen to High Bison on repeat and then repeat again. And again. And again. 4.75 out of 5 stars
