So bittersweet to let something go that you love so dearly. In less than 48 hours our two boys, Shelly and Lily (yes he is a boy too!) are leaving for the Makauwahi Cave Reserve on Kauai, where they will be part of the conservation of that island. They will eat the invasive weeds, allowing the native Hawaiian plants to flourish. As they continue to age (to 100) and grow (to 200 pounds) the Reserve on Kauai is a blessing. To say I will miss them is an understatement. They are beautiful, kind, and are very sociable. Last stop was a trip to the vet to get their health certificates, and today I made a plaster cast of their shells and will use those to make beautiful clay bowls. Thank goodness we will see them at Thanksgiving and also when I volunteer at the Reserve in January. Their journey is what Ive written about in my third childrens book, The Williams Family Bids Aloha to Shell and Lily. Aloha sweet buddies. What joy you have brought to our lives and everyone who has had the fortune of seeing you.
