So for those of you keeping track: today makes 6 weeks 4 days since Nicolas broke his left arm. He has had so many X-rays we have lost count. Today we can add another visit (this time with the surgeon) - yes. The second one in 4 days!, another X-ray (that would be 3 this week), and blood work to determine if an infection is preventing the larger bone from healing properly. The smaller one is healing fine. 99% of the time the bones heal fine. In 1% of the time, the patient has a slow or non healing fracture. It can take anywhere from 3-6 months to know for sure. Sunday will be 7 weeks from break and next Wednesday will be 7 weeks from surgery to place pins. He is on his 5th cast and is ready to be able to sleep comfortably and play basketball. The surgeon said today that he would refer him to another surgeon if the blood work comes back as no infection. If it is slow healing fracture, may be looking at having multiple casts for the next 3-6 months. If it is non-healing, that would mean another surgery but to place a permanent plate and screws.
