So friends here I am with the report as promised regarding the need for womens quota in politics. The reaction was mixed with some getting quite agitated with the very mention of the above. One category (male and female ) felt it might be required but not in its present form.the word quota was demeaning and humiliating by its very meaning.it was suggested that the word might be replaced by fast track as a suitable reference to bringing women up to speed . The reference to Matriarchal society was associated with certain parts of Bhutan and could therefore not be generalized. Someone (a man) felt there was no way on earth women could catch up if not for fast tracking. Women in general felt they were capable enough to make it on their own.some suggested The Govt concentrate on more burning issues such as unemployment and youth issues. They wondered how a few women who were not elected (and therefore did not truly represent them ) could effectively present and get womens issues passed in a male dominated parliament. Some were concerned that our harmonious society might get impacted with men feeling alienated . Gender parity was suggested at the LG level with the winner being Gup and the other Mangmi . Some felt we were capable enough of growing our own democracy without being someones Guinea pig. Finally the reasoning that we could have quota as a temporary measure was countered with which party would commit suicide by withdrawing it once it was passed in parliament. My personal take is yes we need a stronger voice in parliament ,I am not too concerned male or female just as long as our issues are addressed effectively . (The opinions were from across society and submitted for your reading pleasure )
