So my first aid course I did a couple of weekends ago just came in very handy......stood in a queue in a coffee shop to get a bagel, a guy who was sat down started fitting, puking, passed out and slid off his chair. His poor husband freaked, I freaked, I have to admit, it took me a few seconds to get involved, I completely froze, no one else came forward to get involved, someone in the queue asked if anyone could do CPR...... I was so scared, but I am trained for this right... I cleared the way of the chairs and people, told the cafe staff to call 911, helped his husband to get him into recovery position. There was so much puke, but we gathered he was still breathing. I was telling the husband, who was Scandinavia I think, to tell him that help was on the way in his own language and not to worry. I made sure he had not choked on something, apparently he had finished eating, this had never happened before. Emergency services came so quick, thank god, and I hung round a bit to make sure the husband was ok, they were staying in a hotel nearby so it turned out. Hope he will be ok. I think that I was of help, recovery position was essential to stop him choking on his own sick. But my word, that was terrifying, I have to admit, I was grossed out at the sick, but at least I tried to help, apart from one other girl everyone else just stood there. I think it should be mandatory we all do some form of first aid training, thank god it is an essential part that keeps my teaching insurance valid. I know I would have been confident to help if he was choking, or if CPR was needed I would have done heart massage. Phew, bit more excitement then I needed before 10am in the morning.....off to yoga to chill out! Xxx
