TERMS OF REFERENCE Legal Coordinator Under direct authority of : Executive Director, ASF Pakistan Reporting to : Director Operations, ASF Pakistan Localisation: ASF office located in Islamabad, Pakistan, with possible travels to the cities of intervention (Multan, Muzaffargarh, Lodhran and Bahawalpur, and/or any other area in Pakistan as per project requirements) 1. ORGANISATIONAL CONTEXT Acid Survivors Foundation is a Pakistani non-profit organization whose mission is to eradicate acid violence and promote human rights through peaceful democratic processes. Consequently, Acid Survivors Foundation follows a holistic approach and aims at 4 achievements: - Establishment of a relevant legal framework - Develop systems, capacities and infrastructures to provide relevant rehabilitation services so that survivors end up as proactive, autonomous citizens. - Raise awareness and educate communities, stakeholders, law enforcement agencies, media, youth, NGOs and INGOs about acid violence and human rights in general with particular emphasis on the need to fight against domestic and gender based violence. - Ensure that the survivors and their family access justice, social support and relevant medical care. 2. ROLE SUMMARY The Legal Coordinator will coordinate and arrange the legal aid for the survivors by linking them with networks of pro-bono & volunteer lawyers. He/she will also follow up on the legal proceedings, record the updates in files as well as database. He/she will provide the related statistics to management and project section. 3. ROLE DETAILS a) The Legal Coordinator will be organising the below mentioned tasks in collaboration with the management & pro-bono lawyers all over Pakistan with regard to the activities of ASF: 1. Coordination of legal aid Coordinate with the field officer on all the notifications regarding acid throwing incidents Provide or arrange legal advice for the survivors Link the survivors with pro-bono or volunteer lawyers Follow up the proceedings of all the cases of legal aid Update the database of pro bono & volunteer lawyers with contact details Update management on all the latest updates/notifications Identifying strengths and improving areas related to legal aid arranged by ASF 2. Documentation / database Record the first notification by the field officer or third party Keep minutes of all the communication between survivors and pro bono lawyers Record proceedings of all the legal cases of survivors followed up by the organisation and update the survivors’ files accordingly File copies all the legal notification/challans Update the section on legal aid to the survivors in electronic database of ASF 3. Reporting Reporting of activities according to the organization’s procedures and formats of the organisation Reporting of monthly statistics on legal aid to the project section for management & donor reporting Any other task as may be assigned from time to time. b) She will also provide tailor made technical input when requested by the Management/Partners c) She will be in charge of facilitating the development of a network of collaboration with the lawyers and other relevant service providers 4. QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS Qualifications: University degree in Legal Studies Experience: 2 years in a well known organisation preferably in the field of development/NGOs particularly in legal aid section Skills: Good written and oral communication abilities are essential Good listening skills, ability to deal with stressful and challenging situations, very autonomous and able to conduct positive criticism and self evaluation, result oriented, proactive and reactive person able to adjust quickly to cross cultural work environment and personalities.
