So today is World Mental Health day. We take our physical health - TopicsExpress

So today is World Mental Health day. We take our physical health for granted. We work out in the gym or walk that little bit further by getting off the bus or the train one stop earlier. Having good mental health is important too. This mini-blog isn’t just about mental health issues. We’re not experts in those, but we can signpost to you people who are. Just to give you some idea of how prevalent mental health issues are in the community we’ve assessed 999 students this year for Disabled Students Allowance and 12% have had mental health issues. That’s over a hundred people. Our expertise lies in trying to find solutions for people with disabilities so they can use a computer effectively and regain some independence over their lives. Computer technology can certainly empower you into making changes. We have clients who get in touch with us because their mental health is not good and they feel that using computer technology might help. Here are some top tips from AbilityNet on what a computer might be able to help you with. • A computer can be a great resource for connecting with other people who may be in the same situation as you to share information with. There are lots of different forums that you can search for. The great thing about the internet is that it is open 24/7, 365 days a year! So if you can’t sleep and it’s 2am, there will be people who you can chat to and share experiences. • If you find daily living activities like shopping difficult you can always use your computer to help with shopping and banking. Most banks and supermarkets now have an online presence. • If you are finding it difficult to get to places, then why don’t you let the places come to you? I quite like going to the Tate Modern but if you can’t, you can still have a look at their collections • Similarly if you’d like to go to a concert but can’t get there, there is lots of content on sites like Youtube too. As an organisation we can steer you towards sources of information on funding and computer training so if you aren’t too sure what to do then give us a call on 0800 269 545 and we will do all the rest.
