So, today started with an early phone call from Heath (most mornings do start like this with a quick phone call to check how shes feeling and recently, an update on the hair situation). There was definite excitement in her voice asweve made the front page and pages inside the journal too! For the Sling it for a Quid campaign. To which I automatically replied well done you! Heaths response what, well done for getting breast cancer!??! She was obviously taking the piss!! Humour is still what seems to have been getting us through this journey. However, I have learnt that there seems to be a fine balance between being humorous in trying to give Heather positive encouragement and making faux pas which may be construed as undermining the seriousness of this cruel illness and how it must actually feel for Heath. A prime example are the things that we have said to her about her impending hair loss. Bearing in mind we are novices at this cancer malarkey, I am guilty of stating the obvious dont worry, its only temporary or others have said itll grow back. These seem like natural statements to make, but actually on reflection dont really seem to help at all. For anyone to lose their hair, women or men, when it isnt their choice seems to be almost like losing a part of their identity, whether its temporary or not. So now I just dont say anything (well, almost!!) just offer a cuddle. Well, except for perhaps a little joke!! (I think its almost like a nervous habit that I have no control over!). Like this morning, Heather and I were discussing the dilemma of to shave or not to shave and I spontaneously made reference of not wanting to look like a monks head!!! What??!! Sorry Heath, just cant help it. But hey, if it makes Heather laugh then surely Ive done my job!! What else are big sisters for?! Anyway, we thought it was about time we gave you an education on how to check your boobs and so after trawling through several YouTube films, we decided on this one. You must remember though that Heather could not really feel the lump standing up and she did not feel any pain or other symptoms other than the lump. So, better to be safe a get your boobs checked if youre concerned about any changes. Theres also good apps you can get for your phones which will remind you to check your boobs each month. Just like to say here how immensely proud we are of Heather for getting this campaign off the ground and her courage to do so whilst still going through treatment herself. Love ya! Heres the link now go check yourselves. C xxxx youtu.be/Rq0fIuK9oIc
