So we warned about storm surges (and storm swells too) probably - TopicsExpress

So we warned about storm surges (and storm swells too) probably wrongly assuming people knew what it was because of 1. Roxas Blvd and 2. Huuricane Sandy and NYC. But we were wrong I guess. People dont know what it is. A surge is caused by wind, and aggravated by a few other factors. 1. The strong wind pushes the sea and causes high waves. 2. The winds are strongest at the eyewall and since there is low pressure in the center, it draws the water upwards and then of course that has to come down. 3. The waves move along the direction of the storm. 4. If the surge happens as a high tide is coming unto shore, there will be more flooding. Then also realize that an incoming surge has immense power, energy and mass. A cubic meter of water weighs 1000 kg. Imagine all those waves slamming into you with that force?
