So weve seen the new Mets and unfortunately, they bear a suspicious resemblance to the old Mets. We lost today and we had a lot of the same issues that have become far too familiar. While the issues were numerous, I will attempt to select the most egregious issues and rank them. 1) Too many strikeouts. Mets hitters struck out 18 times. That just isnt acceptable. (I might add that Ike Davis was NOT one of them. He hit two balls reasonably well to the right side. Was also just a tad quick on an inside fastball an jerked it foul down the right side.) 2) To the pitchers, it isnt over until its over. Lannan gave up one run and then caved. Had he knuckled down, maybe the Mets still scrape up 2 runs. Our pitchers have been notorious for years. When they give up one run in a one run game ... they cave and give up 2 or 3 more. They seem unable to say, okay, I gave it up but thats ALL, it stops here. 3) To the pitchers, it isnt over until its over. They get within one out of escaping a jam ... at this point, for some reason, our pitchers think the trouble is over. I am to the point that when they get within one out of escaping a jam ... I COUNT on a failure. This happened again in the seventh today. We needed somebody, ANYBODY to get that third out. It came far too late. 4) I have a small amount of blame for TC ... If a guy is you Opening day starter ... show a little confidence. Maybe Gee gets that third out. in the seventh.
