So you want to live a simpler life ... Many people express a desire to go back to a simpler time ... I think we all share that desire, and many people have done so or are in the process of achieving that dream. It does however, take a bit of patience .... I want to relate the first time I decided to drive to the grain elevator using a horse drawn buckboard instead of my truck. First, we had to check out the buckboard, making sure the shafts were in good shape and the tugs were properly buckled on. Then there was greasing the running gears and making sure the hubs were tightened down properly ... Next we had to catch up the horse, groom him, check his shoes, and get him harnessed up ... This took about 45 minutes going at a relaxed pace. After hitching up we had to double check and make sure that everything was fitting properly ... The harness and bridle has to be adjusted to each individual horse that uses it. After all this was done, we were off ... Going at a trot on the winding country roads, contending with the occasional car or truck and horse chasing dogs, the drive of about six miles to town took an hour. After loading sacks of feed we drove the six miles back running the same gauntlet of vehicles and dogs ... Around another hour. Arriving home we had to unhitch, and cool the horse down ... This was done by running cool water over his lower legs, and walking him for a while. After he was properly cooled, he had to be turned out and fed ... This all took about 45 minutes. The entire trip took around 3 1/2 hours not counting loading and unloading feed. I can drive my truck and make the entire round trip (including loading feed) in around 40 minutes ... Quite a difference *This is meant to entertain, not to discourage anyone ... Just pointing out that certain aspects of living simply takes quite a commitment
