SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend Fair showing by B’dos team at regional championship 9/19/2013 By Michael Phillips Despite not bagging any Gold medals, the Barbadian delegation to the 2013 CAREBACO Regional Championships snagged their fair share of podium finishes in the recently-concluded competition. Arriving at the Grantley Adams International Airport between this past Sunday night and Monday morning, the national team returned home with 22 medals from the regional badminton tournament. Dropping one spot in the overall standings from last year, where the Barbados team was narrowly beaten into fourth place, the local juniors finished in fifth place behind hosts Puerto Rico, Suriname, Dominican Republic and Guyana. Bringing home some silverware were Mackenzie Howard and Kayla Miller, who teamed up for the Girls’ Under-11 Doubles. Howard copped another silver when she and Keenan Scantlebury teamed up for the Under-11 Mixed Doubles. Finishing with the bronze in that category were Miller and her male partner, Dominick Scantlebury. Howard closed out her medal haul with a bronze in the Under-11 Girls’ Singles, while Keenan and Dominick both finished third in the Boys’ Under-11 Singles. The pair then teamed up to end in third in the Under-11 Boys’ Doubles. Barbados’ third silver medal came when Amanda Haywood joined forces with Guyana’s Priayna Ramdanni in the Under-15 Girls’ Doubles. Haywood brought home other metal with a third-place finish in the Under-15 Mixed Doubles with Shae Martin as her co-pilot. In her solo flight in the Under-15 Girls, Haywood took a bronze as well. Likewise, Martin brought home bronze in the Under-15 Boys. The Under-13’s were not to be left out of the action and Shomari Smith and Aren Cupples held their own in the highly-competitive category to come away with third place. The Open Women’s Doubles Seniors ended with the teams of Shari Watson and Mariama Eastmond, and Tamesha Williams and Monyata Riviera both finishing third.
