Somatics Yoga Workshop - The Myth of Aging Sunday, March 9th from 2 - 5 pm Hanna Somatic Education (HSE), developed by Thomas Hanna, is a system of neuromuscular education (mind body training) that is a natural, safe way to end chronic pain, relieve stress, and restore freedom of movement. HSE is a series of slow motion movements that you will learn to do on your own that relax tight muscles and strengthen weak ones improving strength, balance, posture, and coordination.. The movements are also very helpful for preventing and healing injuries and for improving any physical activity. WHAT IS SMA? Sensory Motor Amnesia occurs when you learn to hold yourself tightly in response to pain, injury, surgery, or emotional stress, causing your brain to forget how to sense or experience muscles in your body. Your muscles function improperly because strong reflex messages from the ʻfight or ʼflightʼ part of the brain cause them to involuntarily overcontract. Chronically contracted muscles become sore and painful, weak from constant use and prone to chronic fatigue. HOW DOES HANNA SOMATICS WORK? HSE movements activate a part of the brain, the sensory motor cortex, which regulates muscle tone and ensures efficient, proper muscle function. These movements strengthen communication between the sensory motor cortex and the muscles overriding the involuntary overcontractions that keep our muscles tight. Animals do slow somatic movements to keep their muscles relaxed and strong. It is natures way to protect us in the wild from coming up lame and unable to catch food or run from the predator. We have the same central nervous system as the animals so the movements work just as well for us.
