Some Important info on fasting #Ashura (ie. the 10th of #Muharram) - TopicsExpress

Some Important info on fasting #Ashura (ie. the 10th of #Muharram) and what day it is: It is one of the most emphasized days of the year to fast: Ibn Abbas (ra) was asked about observing of fast on the day of Ashura, whereupon he said: I do not know Allahs Messenger (ﷺ) singling out any days fast and considering it more excellent than another, except this day (the day of Ashura) and this month, meaning the month of Ramadan. (Muslim) It used to be mandatory but was then made optional: Aisha (ra) narrates that Allahs Messenger (ﷺ) ordered (the Muslims) to fast on the day of Ashura, and when fasting in the month of Ramadan was prescribed, it became optional for one to fast on that day (Ashura) or not. (Bukhari) It serves as an expiation for the sins of the previous year: Abu Qatadah (ra) narrated that Allahs Messenger (ﷺ) said: Fast the Day of Ashura, for indeed I anticipate that Allah will forgive the sins of the year before it. (Tirmidhi) Depending on what method used, its either on Monday, November 3rd, or Tuesday, November 4th: Before you moan and groan about this, know that one of the reasons Imam Al Nawawi (ra) mentioned in his explanation of Saheeh Muslim that the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wa salam) recommended fasting a day before Ashura as well, is possibly of fear of an incorrect moon sighting. So if you really want to make sure you catch Ashura, then FAST BOTH DAYS! And if you really want to be on the safe side, fast Sunday-Tuesday. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain by doing so as in this moon-sighting discussion no Eid is involved and fasting is beloved in the month of Muharram in general. Another blessing is that it is Sunnah to fast Mondays in general and you can combine the intention for fasting Ashura and Monday to get double the reward! So share this note to encourage others to fast both Monday and Tuesday inshaAllah ~Omar Suleiman.
