Some argue, that the media is a significant force in convincing women, that they are inadequate unless they package and present themselves in certain culturally sanctioned ways (Ring 2000). Arguably, this has promoted increasingly impossible standards of beauty, which have progressively become more unrealistic and unattainable. Right? Wrong! The desire for beauty is not purely a late 20th Century phenomenon. Well-documented beauty practices date back as far as Cleopatra’s milk baths. You might not like it, but I am going to throw caution to the wind- SO WHAT? I suggest, that it is better to try and look as good as your feel; that is, if you are feeling and living well and lucky enough not to have a congenital disease, than to be sitting around taking medication for pain, obesity, diabetes, sleep, constipation and death. Seriously, we are living and working longer, so why can’t we have a little help from our health experts and surgeons? I am not suggesting that you erase all signs of time and experience, but to a natural youthful appearance. Personally, I’d rather take a chance on a top plastic surgeon, a brilliant stem-cell researcher, an incredible injector and my research (because, knowledge empowers me) over ‘armchair psychology’ and a society who tells me what I should be feeling and doing. It seems, that Dr Alexiades-Armenakas agrees with my view.
