Some days are better than others. Some days are busier than others. Some days teach us more than others. Yesterday: 8:00 AM - Breakfast Meeting 10:00 AM - Read to Pre-Schoolers at Reed Early Learning Center as part of CAPs Read for the Record Program. (Read Bunny Cakes by the way) 10:45 AM - Conference Call on speaker phone on Wind Energy Tax Credits while driving to Claremore. 11:45 AM - Spoke with a Retirees at Memorial Heights Baptist Church on Scams targeting Seniors. Packed room. However, I think they were there more for the potluck than they were for me. 2:30PM - Conference Call with constituents and State & County agencies regarding concerns. 4:00PM - Drive to Norman 6:30PM - Attend a dinner and Q&A session at OU with former Secretary of Defense & Former Director of the CIA Robert Gates. 9:30PM - Late dinner & conversation at Louies with an OU College Student who is the son of one of my best friends. Will is one of those kids you knew was going to make a profound difference in the world even though he was only 7 at the time. 1:00AM - Arrive home I go through all of that not to prove Im busy. Were all busy. I go through it to say this: Yesterday I met pre-school children who were eager to learn. They were excited about books. My favorite part of the entire day was them dog piling me with hugs when I was about to leave. I literally was on the floor covered with kids and we were all laughing. I met Seniors who are active and want to learn as much as they can to protect themselves. They may have met the retirement age, but they have not stopped working. Before I got up to speak, they discussed what they were doing as a group for impoverished children in other nations. I met a man who served 8 US Presidents. Presidents from both political parties. He joined the CIA in 1966 as a civil servant and worked himself up to the head of the agency. He said Public Service is a way of life. I met with a young old friend who makes me proud to know him. Hes brilliant and kind. He loves learning and may be from rural Oklahoma, but will soon be studying in Italy. One of those young 20-somethings you look at and say When I grow up, I want to be like that. Yesterday was a rare day. It was good. It was busy. It taught me a lot. Live better. Remember that whether you are a pre-schooler, a senior/retiree, one of the most powerful men in the world, or a college senior, it takes a desire to learn, hard work, a commitment to be willing to start at the bottom & an occasional dog pile of hugs to be better than you were yesterday. An occasional pot luck dinner and an understanding that serving others is a way of life also helps.
