Some great news to bring in the weekend! Stellenbosch member Henri van Waart performed exceptionally well at the prestigious Northern Amateur Open Tournament held at Royal Johannesburg & Kensington last week. Henri managed to make it all the way through to the finals of the matchplay section of the tournament. Unfortunately he did not win the match but held his own well against one of South Africa’s top amateurs, Tristen Strydom, only losing out 3 & 1 to him after a tough 36 holes. Henri’s cousin and another Stellenbosch member who is in the winning news regularly, Pierre de Villiers, also managed to make it through to the matchplay section of the tournament, then won his first round match, but unfortunately fell out after the second round. Only the top 32 finishers in the strokeplay section of the event qualified for the matchplay section. Van Waart won his first round match one up, his second round match 2 & 1, the quarter-finals 4 & 3 and the semi-finals he won on the 19th hole. In the strokeplay section of the tournament, Henri finished in tied 17th position and Pierre in a tie for 24th position.
