Some great responses from parents. Our response and approach is line with Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD). As we have stated previously, we encourage kids to participate in Auskick (I ran the program for many year as an AFL Victoria Development manager). This program is for parents and children that want to develop targeted skill fundamentals with game sense activities attached. These small sided games provide children with enhanced opportunities to develop skills, confidence and decision making awareness. All junior coaches should be implementing game based activities at their training sessions. My child is now 10 years of age (we held him back in first year) and is now in under 12s playing comp footy for 2 years. For the past 10 years of his life he has been participating at swimming (since birth now squad), gymnastics for 5 yrs, little aths 5 yrs, tennis lessons (4 yrs), and participated in the Auskick program for 3 yrs. Not once during his Auskick years did he want to listen to Dad about the correct fundamentals of kicking (I know how to kick Dad..) and developed flaws with his kicking technique, ball drop & impact, which will be hard to correct. I have witnessed first hand the transferrable skills (in line with LTAD) that these other sports have given him. The role of coach at all levels of pre, primary, secondary and local sporting clubs is critical.Regards Anthony Rock
