Some might wonder why I work so hard to prevent surrender...after all, the people who we help dont have much, so the pet is better off with someone else, right? I started FTE while I worked at the shelter. This is what I saw daily for 10 straight years. Sure some of the pets surrendered with major medical problems will end up in a rescue and the same people who wouldnt think about donating a dollar to keep them in their own homes will step up and donate to the rescue that pulled because now there is that ever so popular sad story: Senior dog with a giant tumor/broken leg/dental abscess DUMPED at a shelter!! How could they??. These major surgeries will be funded in days or even hours. But the majority of the pets will end up dejected and depressed in a concrete cell looking like this. At a no-kill shelter they may still be euthanized for health reasons. These pets LOVE their own families. They dont want another family. They mourn and grieve the loss of their owners, their siblings and their homes no matter how modest. I saw this look so many times and even though we tried to give love, affection, attention and enrichment some never got over this separation. Shelters should be there to help abandoned, neglected and unwanted animals. We should stop judging just to fill up our shelters with wanted pets. We take away space and LIFE from others who deserve it because we cant get over our own judgments on who deserves pet ownership. This doesnt have to be. YOU can be their happily ever after.
