Some more Titanic trivia. Part of the build up to D-Day involved many covert operations. One of the most famous was Operation Titanic - a series of military deceptions carried out by the Allies. The operation formed part of the larger Operation Bodyguard - the cover plan for the Normandy landings. Titanic was carried out on the night of 5–6 June 1944 by the Royal Air Force and Special Air Service. The objective of the operation was to drop 500 dummy parachutists, nicknamed Rupert, in places other than the real Normandy drop zones. The dummies were designed to explode on contact with the ground to confuse the enemy and hopefully make them take troops away from the real landing areas. The episode was depicted to dramatic effect in the 1962 feature film The Longest Day. Why the name Titanic was chosen can only be guessed at now, but far from being associated with human tragedy, the name in the minds of many veterans is remembered as saving life.
