Some of UNHCR’s vehicles on auction UN Vehicles Auctioned in Nimba, G/Gedeh Sun, 03/23/2014 - 14:31 admin By: C.Y. Kwanue A fleet of vehicles and other valuable equipment belonging to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) are being auctioned in Saclepea, Nimba County and Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County. This exercise comes at the height of prevailing ‘sustained peace’ in Liberia following its decade long civil crisis. As a result of sustained peace in the country, several non-governmental organizations (NGOs), including the UNHCR that operated in the country during the war years, are folding up. As such, projects being implemented by the offices of the UNHCR have also stalled, thereby causing the entity to announce public auctions of its vehicles and other equipment in the coming days. There are 65 vehicles up for the first public auction including Toyota Land Cruisers and Hilux pickup trucks, Nissans, motorcycles, and construction machines such as bulldozers, road graters and compactors. The unanswered questions that follow the UNCHR’s pronouncement of the public auctions of the equipment are whether projects the entity were destined to implement in the rural areas were done to the end or not, and if the rural poor will benefit from the auctions. Since the UNHCR’s relocation of its offices to Saclepea and Zwedru during the height of the Liberia civil crisis, the public auctions are the first of their kind by the organization. It will involve the auctioning of UNHCR vehicles in a public sale where all registered buyers would be welcomed to make an open bid. The first of the auction exercise will be held in Saclepa on Monday March 24th at 11am at the UNHCR Office location, while the second auction will be held in Zwedru on Monday March 31st at the AIRD/UNHCR Maintenance Yard starting at 11am. The UNCHR statement said anyone wishing to take part in the auction would have to make a deposit in advance; a refundable amount of either L$25,000 (equivalent to US$300), or L$10,000 (equivalent to US$125). It said all interested buyers are therefore being advised to register before the auction’s date. These amounts represent the sale of the vehicles and or the motorcycles and other items. According to the statement, “Registration and viewings will be done during normal working hours for each auction.” Meanwhile, Saclepea’s auction registration is being scheduled for Thursday, March, 20, and will last up to Sunday, March 23, at that areas’ UNHCR office. The Zwedru exercise will be hosted on Thursday, March 27, and will last up to Sunday March 30, at the AIRD/UNHCR Maintenance Yard in Zwedru City. According to the statement, after the auction, full payments for all vehicles are expected to be made by direct deposit into OBT Shipping Ltd Ecobank account. The declared purchaser must deposit 25% of the purchase price by the end of auction day and the balance within seven days from the auction date. Failure on the part of any of the depositors to do so would mean the deposit will be forfeited. “This is a great opportunity for people looking to get a quality used vehicle at a great price in Liberia,” said Mr. John Wilson of the UNHCR. All interested buyers are being advised to take advantage of low prices on high quality vehicles, but they should also keep in mind that the sale is subject to reasonable reserve prices too.
