Some of you have asked what it’s like to work on a movie or a TV program. Here’s a rundown of our day on Tuesday. Our call time was 7:45 am Arriving is always much better when you arrive in a limo. Once inside you are directed to a line that will get you your paper work to assure you are paid for the right amount and hours. After filling out the paperwork, you then go to wardrobe to have your outfit approved or changed. From there you go to makeup. Once everything is approved you find a seat and wait... and wait, and wait some more, until they are ready to take you to the set. This can be two or three hours from the time you arrive. On this day it was about two hours. Once on the set you go to where they direct you and wait to be given further instructions. Once they go over the scene with you, you’ll do a couple rehearsals with the stars stand-ins. After a couple rehearsals the stars take their positions and you are ready to get to work. You set quietly until you hear OK.. “ROLLING”.. Then each camera assistant uses their timed clicker, and calls out their camera number to let the director know they are ready. Today we were using four cameras, and sometimes five. The director says; “BACKGROUND” and two seconds later you’ll hear “ACTION”. From this point you run the scene as rehearsed until you hear the director say “CUT”! Then he’ll say “Back to start” (which means take your starting positions and get ready to do it again..... and again..... and again..... and again..... and again..... and again..... and again..... and again..... and again. We repeated our first scene at least 25 times. The scene went as follows: Stand up and applaud then set down. On cue applaud again..... (quiet) Then applaud again...... Sing along with the star (as if you know this never before, heard song) Stand up and applaud and cheer and keep singing until the end of the song. Applaud and cheer loudly. Once you hear CUT, stop, sit down and be quiet until you hear BACKGROUND / ACTION. Then you repeat everything you just did exactly as before (only better). This scene took until about 2pm when we broke for lunch, but before lunch we had to set and wait for the crew to eat first, they ate on real china with real silverware..... we had paper plates and plastic knives and forks. The only difference in the meal is they got stuffed chicken breast and we got meatloaf. I was able to talk one of the servers into letting me have chicken. Then it was back to the set at 3 pm. We repeated the above (without any additional meal breaks until about 9 pm. Total paid hours 12.5. Then you do it all over again the next day. It’s a lot like the armed forces... A lot of “Hurry up and wait” So that gives you the rundown of our day. Oh, I have to tell you we arrived in our own car, but at least we got to walk by one of the limos.
