Someone apparently illegally dumped construction material at the Habitat for Humanity Dumpster. The non-profits director has a message for that person. Here it goes ... I write this letter actually to the white male in the dark blue T-shirt with a scruffy white beard driving the white 2500 HD pickup truck. As a fellow builder, I appreciate the fact that waste disposal adds to the cost of construction. I know that when we photographed you today at 12:45 p.m. illegally dumping in our Dumpster at the corner of Everett and Morehead Streets in Burlington that you were simply trying to save yourself some money. Clearly you did not know that you were adding to the construction expense of Habitat for Humanity of Alamance County. A non-profit, ecumenical, Christian housing ministry, Habitat for Humanity builds houses in partnership with families who are shut out of the traditional lending market. We sell our houses at cost to families (who participate in building their own homes) at a 0 percent interest rate. Though I know you did not mean to do so, you just added significantly to the cost of the house at 725 East Morehead St. As a Christian ministry we will extend a little grace to you. Though I have a photo of you, a photo of your truck, your license plate number, and an address lifted from the items you dumped, I will not go immediately to the Burlington Police Department. You can call me at 336-222-8191 on Monday, August 4, before 5 p.m. to work out a solution. If you choose not to be in touch, I will take all our information to the Burlington Police Department promptly Tuesday morning. I hope you will do the right thing. Offers of grace are few and far between, and I hope you will act on this one. ROBIN S. WINTGRINGHAM
