Someone asked me recently how I keep writing even though publishing is hard and often discouraging. I explained that for each of my books, I have had an experience with one reader than seemed to be the one the book was meant for. For my first book, Leaving Atlanta, about growing up during the child murders, a woman my age told me that the book was proof that she hadnt imagined her own childhood. That it un-erased her memory. So that book was for her. Shes not a powerful person. She doesnt write reviews or give awards. But she matters to me, and keeps me going. I hate that I dont even know her name.
