Someone be trolling me on Fools Day. Just got this via email. Subject : Natsaliq? Seriously, no! Message : Having skimmed through your article on The Death of the Urdu Script, all I can say is, Bring it on, the sooner the better. As a non-native Urdu speaker, I hate Nastaliq. I taught myself the Urdu alphabet, but Nastaliq presents a frustrating barrier between me and a beautiful language. Its impossible to read, with everything on top of everything else, and no vowels! I just downloaded a wonderful book called Begmaat ke aansu, which deals with the troubles of 1857, and its in Nastaliq! I cant make out a single word in this smudgy, slanting mess! I now have to get the Punjabi (Gurmihki) version, just so I can read it. Seriously, why? Why have a script so decorative that its a pain to read? If this over-stylized script is dying out, I can only rejoice! Good riddance to unreadable squiggles! Sent on: 1 April, 2014.
