Something Ive been thinking about: Forever doesn’t belong to - TopicsExpress

Something Ive been thinking about: Forever doesn’t belong to you. You can’t hold it or possess it or predict it or promise it or plan it. Forever is a blank canvas you don’t get to paint on. You can hope for forever. You can squint out into the distance of your forever and try to imagine what those silhouettes on the horizon represent. You can try to control your forever and plant your feet firmly in front of you in the hopes that you can contain your forever. You can hold on tight to things or people that are fleeting. You can force your forever by refusing to grow, to change, to renew. Knowing this, why do we insist on promising forever to anyone? Why is this the ultimate sign of love and affection? Why do we consider a forever as the singular form of our highest declaration of love? Why is our love considered at its truest if we promise that our love will never falter? Can love not exist in the present moment at its highest expression? Must we know exactly how long we can have this love before we can surrender to it? Forever is not ours to promise and perhaps that is the point. Perhaps that propels us into the present moment in the purest way. Perhaps it cultivates our gratitude and inspires the words “I love you” to leave our lips, because we can never be sure when it will be the last time.
