Sometimes I can only write as a man. Sometimes I can only be a man. Sometimes I have desires to see whats over the hill. I want to see, feel and do something new with someone new. I want some strange. I will slip out of my bed-in the late of night and whore after other systems and styles, leaving my faithful lady Serrada quietly in bed, oblivious to my wandering eyes and ways. I want to feel the firm body of another lover. A fresh kiss delivered from fresh lips. We men are built this way. We stray, I stray, but I will always find my way back to my forever lover. My mistress is Serrada. I wander and get close to other FMA styles and systems. Some are very beautiful you see. I want to see what she has and what they and others have for me. When I cuddle up to a new and beautiful FMA system or style I ask of my new paramour, but three simple questions. Are you based upon proven techniques? Or, are you based more upon theory? Well...I lied...those are the only two questions that I ask. It took me awhile to figure out that the systems that seem to work better than others in real life, do so, because they are based upon proven techniques that are themselves firmly based upon the martial application of sound physical laws and principles. Properly applied martial physics on real time? Hell yes. Theory? Way down on my list of dependability. Do I really have such little faith in theory? No! But when my ass starts taking apart your system or style: It better have sound physical principles governing its very basis. Id much rather put my faith in shit like The Law of Gravity and Law of the Lever than on Mumbo-Jumbo. Can your shit be done on real time? When an upper level Instructor of a system doesnt have a firm grasp on the whys of what he does...then...Feet dont fail me now-point home my foot mobiles. Were heading home. Properly applied naked aggression works, but modern combat Isnt based upon just running around trying to kill shit. It is based upon a lot of math. It is based upon a lot of logistics and statistical analysis, intel and readiness. It is applied by cold hearted professionals with one thought on their mind....winning! They will not let down their fellow soldiers or their country. We escrimadors are in the same business, but we usually fight just one, one on one, but warfare is warfare, whether we fight one or many. Our primary focus is upon dealing with a one on one, but it is still war. We escrimadors have to spend the time to learn how to take other systems apart. Its good practice and a smart thing to do. When you can take another system apart-then and only then will you have the tools to teach your own system properly and truly know its strengths and weaknesses. I say this because at first we dont really want to take our own system apart. We dont want to seek weakness in what we love so dearly, but later as we look more closer into our system we will find weaknesses. We would be fools to not take the time to plug our systems many holes. If we dont have the proper tools we cant do this. As we plug the holes in our own system-we can then have the ability to poke holes into other systems. If you prefer any one type of weapon. If you prefer a given distance. If you prefer a type of hitting over another type of hitting. If you prefer to stand still. If you prefer to move. If you prefer any of these things, but dont really know why, then you may not have the ability to be flexible in combat. We need to be flexible and capable of answering any question an opponent gives us. This is why I am not a short stick Serrada man. I am not a long stick Serrada man. I am. And I am always looking to answer the deeper questions that my art constantly asks me. Fluidity is the saving grace of a really good escrimador. A good escrimador is like water, but more like a wave. Fluid, but possessing great power and destructive ability. Well, thats my goal anyway. Hope its yours too.
