Sometimes symbolism is needed to underscore the importance of certain basics that we tend to ignore. The cleanliness drive led by the Indian Prime Minister is commendable. Lets face it. We Indians lack a sense of basic hygiene. Of course its the duty of the administration to keep our cities and towns clean but its impossible to do so if we citizens dont cooperate. In my neighbourhood I often fight a solitary battle to keep the pavements clean and ensure that we keep the garbage in bags for collection by the municipality workers. Despite them coming twice every morning to collect the bags I find people dumping garbage on the pavement. Its shameful but a fact of life that were filthy by nature. Its not enough to present a Disneyland dream during the Durga Pujas but can we take a pledge to keep at least our neighbourhood clean every day. I think Mr Modi has done the right thing by focusing on this issue. It isnt a small issue and has the potential to be a fantastic start.
