Songs of the season... Now that FolkAlley has their Halloween Scream Stream up and running, Im in a much more festive, holiday-music mood. :-) Autumn has always been, for me, a time of retrospection and reflection. The transitory, liminal nature of autumn--the process of moving from summer to winter--has always made me stop, take stock of life, and so forth. Granted, Im over 12 years here in the Land of Eternal Summer, where autumn begins as soon as I haul the silk fall leaves and scarecrow and pumpkins/jack-o-lanterns out of their storage bin in the storeroom under the stairs--and ends when I put them back into their bin, to be replaced by winter and the Christmas decorations. But still... Seeing my silk fall leaves, smelling the pumpkin spice candles, remind me of more temperate climes and introspection. Introspection works best, for me, in solitude, and heres a beautiful piece from one of my all-time favourite artists, Suzanne Vega: Solitude Standing. I remember getting this cassette around the time I turned 16. The songs on that album bring me back to that time and place fairly vividly. ___ Solitude Standing Solitude stands by the window She turns her head as I walk in the room I can see by her eyes shes been waiting Standing in the slant of the late afternoon And she turns to me with her hand extended Her palm is split with a flower with a flame Solitude stands in the doorway And Im struck once again by her black silhouette By her long cool stare and her silence I suddenly remember each time weve met And she turns to me with her hand extended Her palm is split with a flower with a flame And she says Ive come to set a twisted thing straight And she says Ive come to lighten this dark heart And she takes my wrist, I feel her imprint of fear And I say Ive never thought of finding you here I turn to the crowd as theyre watching Theyre sitting all together in the dark in the warm I wanted to be in there among them I see how their eyes are gathered into one And then she turns to me with her hand extended Her palm is split with a flower with a flame And she says Ive come to set a twisted thing straight And she sayslve come to lighten this dark heart And she takes my wrist, I feel her imprint of fear And I say Ive never thought of finding you here Solitude stands in the doorway And Im struck once again by her black silhouette By her long cool stare and her silence I suddenly remember each time weve met And she turns to me with her hand extended Her palm is split with a flower with a flame https://youtube/watch?v=05AHPFPpHIM
